Salzburg celebrates again: For the first time ever, an Austrian team wins the Champions League against a German one.
The Salzburg Festival in the Champions League never ends in October either. With a 3-1 win at home against Wolfsburg, the Austrian champions celebrated their second win in their third game (the first against a German team in the premier class), thus maintaining the championship lead. The dream of getting into the knockout phase for the first time is becoming more real.
Dream start
The people of Salzburg should appear brave and cheeky. The wish of their coach was to command the youngest team in the premier class. Shooting star Adeyemi made sure in the third minute that the sold out cauldron was boiling on this pleasantly mild October evening. Seiwald's pass into the depths was actually much too short, but rascal Adeyemi switched lightning-fast, outwitted defender Mbabu and made it 1-0.
A dream start. In addition, Adeyemi's third goal in the current competition was the first of his team that did not result from a penalty. For the striker himself, it was once again an advertisement on his own behalf. The fact that his advisor is already talking to Bayern, that top clubs are after him and that he will be Salzburg's record transfer, doesn't bother him.

The home side continued to be brave and cheeky in a match that was very intense from the start. Okafor had bad luck after a great ball acceptance, only hit the crossbar (12th). Instead of 2: 0 it was shortly afterwards 1: 1. Because Nmecha, who represented Weghorst, who suffered from Corona, was able to nod off almost unhindered after an Arnold corner in the five-meter room (15th). Goalkeeper Köhn made a mistake, although coach Jaissle had expressly warned against Arnold's standards.
An open exchange of blows developed with two highlights just before the break. First, Wöber was just able to block a Nmecha shot from close range (39th). On the other hand, Okafor served Sucic ideally, but his shot was elegantly defused by keeper Casteels.
After the break, Adeyemi set the first highlight and tried acrobatics after a corner. But Casteels prevented the goal of the year (57th). Okafor then proved that Salzburg can also do it after corner kicks – twice. He crowned his strong performance with a brace to make it 3-1 (65th, 77th).
Sports director Christoph Freund, rumored to be moving to Leipzig, was not in the stadium yesterday. He was only absent from the family because of an illness.
