Himalayas proved to be resistant to global warming

Some Himalayan glaciers are not melting under the influence of global warming. This conclusion was reached by scientists as a result of a new study, writes NSN.

Experts named the structure of glaciers as the reason for such a curious phenomenon: blocks of ice are combined with rock. Due to the presence of stones, enhanced thermal insulation is formed.

As geologist Darren Jones of the University of Exeter notes, stony glaciers now account for one twenty-fifth of all Himalayan glacial ice. And their number will increase. This process directly depends on the melting of glaciers, which at a certain stage become stony.

Over the past century, the volume of glaciers in the Himalayas has decreased by 25%. The mountain system now contains about 51 cubic meters of ice, which is the equivalent of 60 trillion liters of water.

It was previously reported that the melting glaciers of the Himalayas are releasing huge amounts of chemicals they have accumulated over decades and contaminating lakes with pesticides.
