Pamela Helmstadter, 72, and her husband John, 82, were out walking their dogs in Washington County, Maine, on October 13 when game wardens lost the scent.
John fell and later died, but the couple did not have cell phones to call for help.
Maine Game Warden Sergeant Josh Beall said: “Pamela was more physically fit than he was, and they made the decision for him to stay put while she tried to go and find help.”
But the wife was disoriented and couldn't find her way back path.
The next day, the Helmstadters' neighbor noticed that the package left on the porch of their house was still there, and that one of the dogs was near the house, but the couple had disappeared. He notified the authorities and a search began that night.
On Thursday, searchers flew over Pamela five times and spotted her just when she had almost decided that all hope was lost. She was found at about 2:30 p.m., she had severe hypothermia.
Pamela survived low temperatures and rain thanks to her faithful dog. Bill said, “When the K-9 team found her, her dog was very protective of her and even laid on her chest. It looks like the dog did that at night to keep her warm.”
Pamela was taken to the hospital where she is recovering, he said.
