Heavy rains in Spain cause massive floods: there are fatalities

by alex

Flash flooding has devastated eastern Spain after heavy rains.

At least 51 people have died in floods in southern and eastern Spain. Dozens of people are still waiting for rescue in Valencia, stuck on roofs and in cars.

Reuters reports this.

The elements on October 29 covered most of Spain from the province of Malaga in the south to Valencia in the east. Authorities in the hardest-hit regions have advised people to stay home and avoid all non-essential travel.

“Bodies have been found, but out of respect for the families, we are not going to provide any further details,” said Carlos Mason, head of the Valencia region.

Children were among the dead in the Valencia region.

Dozens of videos posted on social media showed people trapped in floodwaters, some holding on to trees to avoid being swept away by the current.

Authorities used helicopters to rescue some residents from their homes.

According to Spanish airport operator Aena, 12 flights that were due to land at Valencia airport, were rerouted to other cities. Another ten flights were cancelled.

National rail operator ADIF has suspended high-speed trains between Madrid and Valencia due to damage to the tracks. A high-speed train carrying 276 passengers derailed in the Andalusia region, no one was hurt.

What is causing the floods

The death toll from flooding in Europe was the worst since 2021, when almost 200 people died, mostly in Germany.

Scientists say extreme weather events are becoming more frequent due to climate change.

Meteorologists say the warming of the Mediterranean, which increases water evaporation, plays a key role in the intensification of torrential rains.

Recall that the UN told how everyday life will change due to climate change.
