The heads of the East German states supported the continuation of the construction of the Russian Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline. Spiegel reports that local governments are unhappy with this joint decision.
The heads of government of the regions of the former GDR belonging to the centrist and left parties have called for the continuation of the construction of the project, according to the minutes of the East German conference. At the same time, it was not possible to issue a joint resolution due to opposition from the opposition, journalists note.
This was opposed by representatives of the Green Party in local government: they pointed to “human rights violations” by the Russian state, because of which the project must be curtailed. Proponents of the continuation pointed to the critical importance of the pipeline for the energy supply of Germany and Europe.
