“He started the war”: Trump named the culprit in the attack on Ukraine

Trump accused Biden of making dangerous promises to Ukraine, which provoked Putin to launch a full-scale invasion.

Republican Party presidential candidate Donald Trump believes that his opponent, the current leader of the country Joe Biden, should never have promised Ukraine membership in NATO.

He said this on the All In podcast.

The politician is convinced that it was these dangerous promises from Biden, which fueled Ukraine’s intentions to join the North Atlantic Alliance, that provoked Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“I've been hearing for 20 years that if Ukraine joined NATO, it would be a real problem for Russia. I've heard that for a long time. I think that's why this war started,” Trump said.

He added that Biden constantly said “the wrong things.”

“One of the wrong things is that he said that Ukraine would join NATO… When I heard him speak, I thought that this guy would start a war,” the politician noted.

Trump once again emphasized that the war in Ukraine would never have started if he had remained president.

“For four years [of Trump's presidency – ed.] no one even said that Russia would attack Ukraine. This would never have happened. Russia was not going to attack Ukraine. As soon as I left [as president – ed.], they began to gather forces to the border. And I thought that Putin is probably a good negotiator – I thought that he was doing this for the purpose of negotiations. Then suddenly they attacked,” he said.

According to Trump, Biden should have said the exact opposite.

“The things he said and still says are crazy,” the Republican emphasized.

A columnist for the British publication The Guardian believes that NATO's commitment to defending Ukraine as an ally may ultimately be worth little more than the paper on which it was written. The promise of Ukraine's entry into NATO at the July summit in Washington threatens to demonstrate the vulnerability of the Alliance and make further negotiations on peace in Ukraine with the president of the aggressor state, Vladimir Putin, impossible.
