Bulgarian Prime Minister Kirill Petkov said that Sofia would speak with the European Union about the aggression of the Russian Federation.
Bulgarian Defense Minister Stefan Yanev was fired after making a scandalous statement about the war in Ukraine.
It is reported by Reuters and Radio Liberty.
Yanev is called a sympathizer of the Bulgarian Socialist Party – the successor of the communists. He suggested calling the Russian invasion of Ukraine an “operation” rather than a war, a term that Putin himself avoids.
Bulgarian Prime Minister Kirill Petkov fired Yanev on Monday and added that Sofia would speak with the European Union about the aggression of the Russian Federation.
“My defense minister cannot use the word 'operation' instead of the word 'war'. You can't call it an operation when thousands of soldiers on both sides have already been killed,” Petkov said.
This is not the first scandal associated with Stefan Yanev. When Putin demanded in January that all Alliance troops be withdrawn from NATO member states as of 1997, Yanev suggested that Bulgaria be protected only by the national armed forces. This caused a flurry of criticism against him from pro-European politicians and the public in Bulgaria.
Recall that Bulgaria closes the airspace for Russian airlines.
