The Harsh Consequences of Sanctions: 10 Common Things Russians Have to Do Without

U.S. and European Union sanctions against Russia continue despite Kremlin statements . Due to financial restrictions, millions of Russians were left without everyday things.

In particular, pork, sugar, paper became scarce products. Also on the list are the technological losses of Russians, for example, Google Play and other services.

The online publication SPEKA has collected ten common things that have caused problems in Russia due to sanctions.

1. Paper

So, we are talking about the same A4 paper that is used for printing. And not only that: due to sanctions, the deficit will be 40%: after all, this paper is mainly imported from abroad, and Europe accounts for 70% of deliveries.

2. Microchips

The auto industry became the first victim of the ban on the sale of microchips to Russia. The AvtoVAZ plant has already stopped work three times due to the inability to produce cars without imported chips. Also in Russia, they are considering the possibility of producing a car in a “simplified configuration” – without automated braking systems and airbags.

3. Rings for marking birds

In the Vladimir region, ornithologists complain that the stock of rings for marking birds will not last long. Rings used to be imported from Poland.

4. Nails

The fact that the self-proclaimed superpower even imports nails came as a shock to Valentina Matviyenko, speaker of the Russian Federation Council. “We don't even produce nails ourselves in a country that produces so much metal,” she wonders.

5. Google Play and other services

The Russians missed the opportunity to use Google Play. It was replaced by the Russian analogue of NashStore, which launched with big problems. Instead of Google Docs, “MyOffice” now works in Russia, instead of Zoom – Yandex.Telebridge, instead of Trello – “Headquarters”.

7. Pork

More powerful, pork is still available in Russia, but its shortage is predicted and a significant rise in price – the lack of access to imported food additives is forcing a reduction in the number of pigs. True, alternative types of “meat” are already being planned in Russia – in particular, from crickets.

8. Apple smartphones

The sanctions have also affected the status symbol of every Russian blogger – it is estimated that the stocks available in Russian stores will last for several months. The Russians are looking for workarounds, the lucky ones are trying used iPhones with apps already blocked.

9. Sugar

Despite the fact that Russia was hardly bombed, the sugar crisis in Russian stores has become almost legendary. In general, people in Russia also complain about the increase in the cost of products and the decrease in the assortment on the shelves.

10. IKEA

During the full-scale war with Russia, more than 1,000 companies have withdrawn or temporarily suspended their activities there. Perhaps the most publicized was the closing of the stores of the Swedish furniture retailer IKEA, which led to queues and fights on the last day of the stores.

As previously reported, more than 1,000 international companies are on the stage of exiting the aggressor country. Another 430 have already suspended their activities in the Russian Federation. Almost 600 companies, according to the leadership of the OP Yermak, continue to work in Russia, financing the war in Ukraine.
