It is not reported exactly how they plan to avenge Haniyeh's death.
Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has ordered a direct strike on Israel in response to the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh.
About The New York Times reported this, citing three Iranian officials familiar with the order.
According to the NYT, Khamenei announced the order at an emergency meeting of Iran's Supreme National Security Council on the morning of July 31, which was held after Haniyeh's assassination.
It is not yet known how seriously Iran's military commanders are considering a combined drone and missile attack on military targets near Tel Aviv and Haifa, but they will try to avoid hitting civilian targets, Iranian officials said.
One option they said they were considering is a coordinated attack from Iran and other fronts where there are allied forces, including Yemen, Syria and Iraq, to achieve maximum effect.
Khamenei also ordered the military to prepare plans for attack and defense in case of an escalation of the conflict, and if Israel and the United States decide to strike Iran.
After Haniyeh's death, Khamenei publicly promised to avenge him, since he died on Iranian soil. He also said Israel had created conditions for “harsh punishment.”
A Palestinian terrorist group has informed Hamas that one of its leaders, Ismail Haniyeh, was killed on the night of July 31 in Tehran.
Arab TV channel Al Mayadeen claims that the house where Haniyeh was was hit by a missile from another country, but the official cause of his death has not yet been announced.
The UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting in New York over the killing of Ismail Haniyeh.
Iran has reportedly invited the matter to be discussed, sending a request UN Secretary General and the Permanent Mission of Russia, which is chairing the Security Council in July.
Security Council members Russia, Algeria and China supported Tehran's request. Moscow and Beijing condemned the liquidation of the ideological leader of Hamas.
