A group of hackers, allegedly acting in the interests of Russia, attempted to gain unauthorized access to CrowdStrike Holdings Inc.'s emails. is an American information security company based in Sunnyvale, California. This was announced on Thursday, December 24, by Reuters.
The company said in its blog that it was contacted by the Microsoft Threat Research Center on December 15th. According to them, cybercriminals tried to access the company's correspondence using the Microsoft Azure cloud platform. “An attempt was made to read the e-mail – and it, as confirmed by Microsoft, failed,” – said experts at CrowdStrike Holdings Inc. The company representatives added that due to the specifics of their own security architecture, they do not use Office 365 email.
Specialists of CrowdStrike Holdings Inc., in particular, investigated cyberattacks on the servers of the US Democratic National Committee, which the general public learned about in 2016.
How the hackers acted
Earlier it became known that the systems of the Texas-based company SolarWinds, allegedly became for hackers by delivering malicious software to the computers of US government agencies.
Having penetrated into SolarWinds, the hackers placed their secret code in one of the update packages for the programs of this company – and then managed to send it to the clients of the company through the system of automatic updates (updates).
The fact that cybercriminals attacked CrowdStrike Holdings Inc. raises questions about whether other platforms could be used as entry points for the subsequent hacking of the systems of American ministries and departments, Reuters notes.
Large-scale cyberattack
Earlier, on December 14, the US authorities confirmed that at least two government departments – the Treasury and the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) – were the targets of a large-scale, well-prepared cyberattack from abroad. At the same time, a software called SolarWinds used by a number of US government agencies was hacked. SolarWinds has already reported that 18,000 of its customers have downloaded the infected software. Alleged hackers were able to use this program for almost 9 months to monitor what was happening on infected computers.
Moscow on the same day rejected accusations of the involvement of Russian hackers in attempts to break into computers of the US Treasury. “If there have been some attacks for many months and the Americans could not do anything about it, probably there is no need to blame the Russians so unfoundedly for everything, we have nothing to do with it,” said the press secretary of the Russian president Dmitry Peskov.
