Leger security specialist Olivier Heriveaux experimented with a security chip that held the keys to a crypto wallet. As a result, he managed to achieve access to the data by the action of a laser.
The specialist demonstrated his method at the Black Hat conference. According to him, the microcircuits of the chips are sensitive to ultraviolet radiation. Therefore, it is enough to direct the laser beam to certain parts of the microcircuit at the right time.
The method is based on a timing attack. It uses the fact that the chip takes a short period of time to carry out any logical operation. If a hacker has a table of such timings, he can recover the data on the chip.
The specialist conducted experiments on the Coldcard hardware wallet. After many attempts, he was able to find the right points on the chip, which must be affected by the laser.
