Guterres: climate warming by more than 1.5 degrees would be a disaster
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said that a warming of the world climate by more than 1.5 degrees Celsius would turn into a disaster, reports TASS.
“The world is heading for a catastrophe – warming by 2.7 degrees instead of 1.5 degrees, as everyone previously agreed to limit. Science says any warming above 1.5 degrees will be a disaster. In order to limit the temperature rise to 1.5 degrees, we need to reduce emissions by 45% by 2030, then it will be possible to achieve carbon neutrality by the middle of the century, ”he said.
Guterres stressed that instead, countries are moving towards increasing greenhouse gas emissions by 16% by 2030.
Previously, scientists named the factor that will cause irreversible climate change. We are talking about the melting of glaciers in Greenland and Antarctica, which will entail a chain of global events. Melting ice will cause the warm Atlantic currents to cool down, this will lead to a decrease in rainfall in the tropical zone, which in turn will turn the Amazon forests into savannahs.
Prior to this, UN Secretary General António Guterres said that 2020 was “an unprecedented period of extreme weather and climate disasters.” The concentration of carbon dioxide has reached a new maximum level, increasing by 148%.
