A gunman opened fire at a church in southern California, killing one person and seriously injuring five.

“They showed exceptional heroism and bravery. It's safe to say that if they didn't intervene, this situation could have been much worse,” Deputy Sheriff Jeff Hallock said.
Church parishioners say they didn't recognize the shooter and hadn't seen him in church before. The man opened fire when everyone was taking pictures with the pastor who was leaving for Taiwan.
The Sheriff's Department detained the suspect, who turned out to be Asian in his 60s. He had two commercially available handguns.
The motive for the crime remains unclear. Police officials said they did not know if the incident was related to ethnic hatred.
