Environmental activists held a march calling on European institutions to stop subsidizing fossil fuels.
On Saturday, October 5, 21-year-old Swedish activist Greta Thunberg was detained by police in Brussels when she, along with a group of other protesters, blocked traffic in the center Belgian capital.
This was reported by the publication De Mogen.
On this day, environmental activists marched from Luxembourg Square in front of the European Parliament to the Merode metro station in Etterbeek, calling on European institutions to stop subsidizing fossil fuels.
The Swedish climate activist herself was not present at the march, but showed up with several other activists at Rogier Square, where she blocked traffic.
“We are here today with people from all over Europe to demand an end to fossil fuel subsidies. This is a European campaign and Brussels is of course an important place to take action,” the newspaper quotes Greti Thunberg as saying.
The police asked the demonstrators to disperse. Then several activists left, while the rest stayed. They were later arrested. Thunberg was also arrested.
Earlier, environmental activists addressed an open letter to the heads of European institutions, in particular the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and the President of the European Council Charles Michel, calling for a clear plan to gradually phase out fossil fuel subsidies in Europe by 2025.
In 2023, the member states of the European Union allocated 171 billion euros in support of fossil fuels.
Recall that earlier, Greta Thunberg organized a strike in solidarity with Palestine.
