Green light for robotic taxis

The robot Bulli, here as a draft

The Volkswagen Group plans to send e-group taxis without drivers through German cities as early as 2025. Appropriate funds have now been approved.

The Volkswagen supervisory board has given the go-ahead for the development of an autonomous driving offer. E-VW buses full of artificial intelligence are to be tested on German roads this year. The basis is the all-electric new edition of the Bulli ID.Buzz, which will celebrate its world premiere next year.

The robot taxis will then be used in practice from 2025 – initially in selected German metropolises. That could be Hamburg and Hanover, for example, where the VW Group is already offering a kind of shared taxi service with Moia. At the moment, however, with drivers. At Moia, customers with a similar start and destination are collected and transported together. Orders and payments are made via a mobile phone app.
