Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias said on Tuesday, March 22, that he wants to head a humanitarian mission to Mariupol.

He recalled that thousands of ethnic Greeks live in the city surrounded by Russian troops, according to Ekathimerini.

Dendias also said that he had already informed the authorities of Ukraine and the Russian Federation about this humanitarian mission.

I intend to personally lead this assistance,” the minister said after meeting with Greek Consul General in Mariupol, Manolis Androulakis, who is the latest European Union diplomat to leave the city this week.

Dendias added that he coordinates his activities with the Red Cross.

Mariupol is a city with a population of over 400,000 people.

Before the war, it historically had a significant population of ethnic Greeks.

At least 10 of them were killed, and several more were injured after Russia launched an attack on the city.

The Greek government claims that more than 150 citizens were evacuated from the region Greece, as well as ship crews and people who are ethnic Greeks.
