In the United States, combat aircraft that have served for about 40 years are being modernized.
Greece will return 32 F-16 Block 30 fighter jets to the United States, where they will be upgraded and sent to Ukraine as military assistance to counter Russian aggression.
This is reported by the Bulgaria Military publication with reference to Western and Middle Eastern media.
Such an agreement was made possible thanks to the approval by the US Congress of the export of 40 F-35A fighters to Greece. They should replace the F-16s purchased back in 1985.
Thus, Greece will join such European countries as Belgium, the Netherlands and Denmark, which also transfer F- 16, mainly due to receiving the replacement F-35A.
In addition to purchasing the F-35, the Greek Air Force began receiving generation 4+ Rafale fighters. Some of these aircraft were donated second-hand by France, allowing Greece to maintain a diversified fleet.
The transfer of American F-16s has raised speculation that Greece may transfer its decommissioned French Mirage 2000 fighter jets to Ukraine.
Recall that President Vladimir Zelensky reported a positive decision of the Polish government on an issue that will allow Ukraine to receive F-16 fighters as quickly as possible.
