Athens prefers payments over 3.6 billion euros in 2021 and 2022.
Greece's Finance Minister Christos Staikouras.
Greece is continuing its early repayment of billions in loans from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The process has been initiated for the payments due in 2021 and 2022, the Ministry of Finance announced in Athens on Monday.
It is a total of 3.6 billion euros. Finance Minister Christos Staikouras announced at the beginning of June that he would not decide on the move until the second half of the year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
In 2019, Greece had already repaid 2.7 billion euros early. With the steps now announced, it will have paid 80 percent of its IMF debt.
Greece borrowed the money because of the debt crisis. In the meantime, the EU country can again get money on the capital markets.
The government announced last week that it would borrow up to twelve billion euros in this way in the coming year.
