Great Britain refused to recognize the results of the elections in Belarus

British Foreign Minister Dominic Raab said that the country refused to recognize the results of the elections in Belarus. He wrote about this on his Twitter account.

Raab stressed that the UK does not accept the election results in the same way as Lithuania. According to him, Belarus must fulfill its OSCE commitments, adhere to democratic principles and respect human rights. “We continue to call for an independent investigation,” the British Foreign Minister concluded.

Earlier, Lithuania recognized Svetlana Tikhanovskaya as the legitimate president of Belarus. Lithuanian deputies propose to regard the actions of the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko when concluding any new agreements as annexation of the country.

In Belarus, protests have continued for the fifth week over the official results of the August 9 presidential elections, according to which Alexander Lukashenko won 80 percent of the vote. In the first days, the rallies were violently dispersed with the help of special equipment, seven thousand people were detained.

The European Union intends to impose sanctions against Belarusian officials responsible for rigging elections and using force against protesters. However, Lukashenka will not be included in the sanctions list.
