Martha Hilda Eckle Cardenas, known online as Abuelita Martha, which translates to “Grandma Martha,” has become an internet sensation during the Covid-19 pandemic.
She began sharing videos of herself taking on online challenges and telling hilarious stories about her travels around her native Mexico.
Martha's TikTok page quickly grew to 5.2 million followers, and she also boasts over 200,000 fans on Instagram and 180,000 on YouTube.
She affectionately called her loyal followers “grandchildren.” Her real grandson Max, who also edited her videos, announced her death on Monday, September 9.
He shared a photo of Marta proudly holding an award from YouTube for reaching 100,000 subscribers earlier this year.
Max wrote: “Fly high, Martha. You filled the hearts of millions of people around the world with happiness. You shared joy, advice and your stories inspired many people. Today, September 9, 2024, we mourn your loss, but you will always live in our hearts. Millions of your virtual grandchildren will remember you with love and tenderness.”
Martha's family did not say how old she was when she died, or the cause of death. Her funeral will take place at the San José Church in Cuautitlán Izcalle, near Mexico City, at 4 p.m. on September 14.
Marta posted her last TikTok video on July 28, when she took part in a “protein challenge” and posed with a toy avocado.
Recall that “the world's scariest bodybuilder” has died. The 36-year-old Belarusian consumed 16,500 calories a day and lifted more than 300 kg.
