Hong Kong robot nurse measures temperature and grimaces sympathy
The robotic company Hanson Robotics, known for the android robot Sophia, five years later presented to the public a new development – the android robot Grace. She is a robot nurse, her job is to help the elderly, the disabled, and also to care for infectious patients who have contracted covid.
Grace has Asian features, although not so Asian that she can be attributed to any of the Asian nations. She can carry on a conversation in an Asian (Chinese) manner, as if she is European. She has brown hair and thick dark eyebrows. Grace was dressed for the presentation in a medical suit.
Behind the cutout of the medical suit, Grace has a video camera with which she can recognize whether the patient is responding to her participation, as well as a thermal imager to measure the patient's body temperature.
Grace has artificial intelligence – it is needed to provide preliminary data for the diagnosis of a patient. The robot nurse speaks three languages – English and two Chinese, Mandarin and Cantonese dialects.
Sophia was invited to present Grace. She introduced the robot nurse, after which she began to comment on her birth. “My job is to visit people, but I'm not only doing measurements, for example, temperature. I provide them with socialization, I can also conduct therapeutic conversations to alleviate their condition, I can just read books to them, but most importantly, I will relieve the medical staff, people who are under a huge burden during the pandemic. “
According to the founder of the company, David Hanson, the main task that he “set” for Grace is to relieve the burden on the medical staff of the hospital, completely exhausted by overtime work during the pandemic. “Human appearance promotes confidence and natural commitment,” says Hanson, “because we're programmed to communicate face-to-face with humans.”
According to scientists who helped create the Chinese robot nurse, Grace has the ability to determine if a person is sick with covid. Of course, no one will trust only one robot, albeit a medical one, but the progress, scientists say, is already obvious.
