Google told about attacks on Youtube-bloggers by hackers “registered on the Russian-speaking forum”.
The company blog reports that since the end of 2019, the Google team has thwarted financially motivated phishing campaigns targeting YouTube users with the Cookie Theft malware.
Hackers lure their target with fake collaboration opportunities – usually demonstrating anti-virus software, VPNs, music players, photo editing, or online gaming. When a user clicks on a link, an attacker steals their channel and uses it either to resell or to demonstrate fraudulent cryptocurrency schemes.
According to Google representatives, since May of this year, the company's specialists in cooperation with YouTube, Gmail, Trust & Safety, CyberCrime Investigation Group and Safe Browsing have managed to reduce the number of phishing emails in Gmail by 99.6%. Experts have blocked 1.6 million messages, 2.4 thousand files and restored about 4 thousand profiles. The data on the activity of the attackers was transferred to the FBI.
The company also named the main tactics, techniques and procedures that hackers use to lure victims. These are social engineering with ad offering, fake software landing pages and social media accounts, and cookie stealing malware delivery.
