Cybersecurity firm Human has discovered rogue apps on Google Play that “turn” smartphones into TVs. Thus, the attackers earned money by imitating ad views.

In total, experts found 29 programs on Google Play that “turned” infected smartphones into TVs with Smart TV support. Thus, they simulated about 650 million ad views per day. Subsequently, the attackers received money from advertisers for this, convincing them that the views were real, when in fact no one watched the ad.

Among other things, the scammers connected about 36 programs from the Roku app store to their scheme. They used them to establish communication with a server that controls a network of bots.
