With the release of macOS Big Sur, the Safari browser began using a new Extension API, which allowed plugins built for other browsers to be used. Now it has become known that the developers Apple, Mozilla, Google and Microsoft have decided to go further and standardize the creation of extensions.
Representatives of all major browsers are reported to be involved in extension standardization. The group, called the WebExtensions Community Group (WECG), will be led by experts from Apple and Google.
First of all, this initiative will simplify the process of developing extensions. Plugin performance and security can also increase. Project participants, however, will not flesh out every aspect of plugin development. That is, developers will continue to work independently and follow their own rules and policies.
