Gloomy forecast for Sochi: will qualifying be canceled?

Rain could cause a stir again

The race weekend in Russia could once again be completely whirled through by the weather, especially on Saturday it doesn't look good.

During the first free practice session in Sochi, the route around the Olympic Park in 2014 was windy, but it stayed dry. Every now and then the sun even flashed on the Black Sea.

The Formula 1 teams already have to play poker on Friday, because it could happen that the entire Saturday falls into the water. McLaren team boss Andras Seidl confirms on ORF: “It looks really bad on Saturday, we will run a lot of programs on Friday, we have to improvise a bit.”

On Sunday, the weather experts are again assuming dry conditions. Should Saturday and thus the third practice session and qualifying actually be canceled, then the result from FP2 would ensure the starting grid. Alternatively, a qualifying session on Sunday morning could also be inserted.

“It looks bleak tomorrow, it may well be that qualifying will be canceled. We will certainly try to get a good time in second practice with the very soft tires,” says Haas team boss Günther Steiner.
