The competitive debut of coach Oliver Glasner at Eintracht Frankfurt was a serious accident. With the Upper Austrian on the sidelines, Eintracht lost 2-0 (0-0) in the first round of the DFB Cup on Sunday at third division Waldhof Mannheim. Martin Hinteregger saw the losers in the 62nd minute the yellow-red card after he had pulled an opponent by the jersey.

The Mannheimers cheered after a double strike from Marcel Seegert (48th) and Joseph Boyamba (51st). The Frankfurters didn't know what to do with it and showed a very poor performance overall. Again and again Glasner's team played across or back against the low-lying hosts, but it did not develop high-quality chances. Waldhof should have led at half time.

“We will be very, very hard with ourselves and analyze the game,” said Glasner. “We did a lot of things badly today,” he admitted. Borussia Dortmund is waiting for the start in the Bundesliga next Saturday.

Mainz 05 and 1. FC Köln only got through on penalties. Mainz won from the point 8: 7 at fourth division Elversberg, after extra time it was 2: 2. Kevin Stöger scored for the Mainz team in the decision. Cologne won the penalty shootout at fourth division Carl Zeiss Jena thanks to a penalty scored by Louis Schaub 4-2. There it was 1: 1 after 120 minutes.

Champions League participant VfL Wolfsburg struggled under Glasner's successor Mark van Bommel after extra time to 3-1 at Prussia Münster. Xaver Schlager played through in Wolfsburg against the fourth division. Union Berlin prevailed 1-0 with Christopher Trimmel at Türkgücü Munich (3rd division). Hertha BSC also won 1-0 thanks to a late goal at SV Meppen (3rd). Bundesliga relegated Schalke 04 defeated the upper division Villingen 4-1, but only became the favorite after changing sides.
