Giants in the sky: an unusual helicopter transportation took place in the suburbs
An amazing and carefully planned operation took place in the Moscow region. A Mi-26 helicopter transported a 20-ton Mi-6 from one airfield to another. For details, please contact MIR 24 correspondent Igor Naymushin.
This operation is unique in its complexity. The largest Russian transport helicopter, the Mi-26, delivered its older brother, the legendary Soviet Mi-6 helicopter, here to the Chernoe airfield.
The operation to transfer the Mi-6 was excellent. It was carried out by the pilots of the Ministry of Emergency Situations on a helicopter, which belongs to the department. The specialists carefully planned the operation and prepared for it for a long time. After all, the weight of the Mi-6 is very large, almost 20 tons. Therefore, it was necessary to make special fasteners and cables to lift such a whopper into the sky. It was delivered to Chernoe airfield from Zhukovsky, where the Mi-6 was used as a flying laboratory of the Gromov Flight Research Institute.

“The difficulty is that this is close to the maximum carrying capacity of the Mi-26 helicopter. Of course, the filigree skill of the Emergencies Ministry's crew allowed it to be carried out without a hitch. Everything was verified literally to the millimeter. Selection of line lengths and so on under the control of the crew, ”said Pavel Nenastiev, director of the Moscow aircraft repair plant DOSAAF.
The Mi-6, created in the late 1950s, became a real sensation. At that time, this machine became the largest rotorcraft in the world and held this record for more than 10 years. For its ability to carry cargo under the fuselage, the helicopter received the designation in NATO as Hook, that is, “Hook”. The Mi-6 is planned to be completely renovated and raised into the sky, but this may take more than one year.
You can get acquainted with the unique Soviet Mi-6 helicopter within the framework of the Sky: Theory and Practice aviation festival. It will take place here at the Chernoe airfield in the Balashikha region in a week.
