The first live killer hornet was discovered in the American County of Whatcom in 2021. This was reported on the website of the Washington State Department of Agriculture.
The information came on 11 August from a local resident who sent in a photo of the insect. The next day, Washington State Department of Agriculture entomologists confirmed that it was the giant Asian hornet Vespa mandarinia. Its bite can lead to the death of a person due to the highly toxic poison.
“This hornet exhibits the same behavior that we saw last year – it attacks the nests of paper wasps,” said entomologist Sven Spichiger.
All residents have been encouraged to report hornets seen so that the Washington State Department of Agriculture can set traps for Vespa mandarinia, which will tag the insects to track their route to the nest.
