The authorities of the American state of Minnesota have asked citizens not to release the inhabitants of the aquariums into the reservoirs. Concerns have been raised by the increasing number of giant goldfish found in a local lake, ABC News reported.
It all started when Burnsville officials found 10 huge fish during a water quality survey in early July. On Monday 12 July, 18 more individuals were found. Some specimens reached 46 centimeters in length and weighed almost two kilograms.
“They grow bigger than you think and contribute to the deterioration of water quality by washing out sediment and destroying plants,” the municipal authorities wrote to residents on Twitter. It is also noted that this species is capable of displacing other creatures from its usual range.
Earlier, a fisherman from the US state of Virginia caught a record size goldfish. Its weight was 1.6 kilograms, and its length was more than 40 centimeters. The State Department of Natural Resources has recognized it to be the largest goldfish recorded in Virginia.
