The representative of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Federal Republic of Germany, Steffen Hebeshtreit, confirmed the information about the plans to hold talks between the adviser to the German Chancellor on foreign policy Jens Pletner with the deputy head of the Russian presidential administration Dmitry Kozak. TASS reports.
The planned meeting between Russia and Germany on the issue of Ukraine without the participation of Kiev became known earlier. Reuters called these talks rare.
The agency, citing two anonymous sources in the German government, also noted that the German authorities doubted the US position that Russia was allegedly preparing a possible attack on Ukraine. As one of the interlocutors noted, Pletner and Kozak will meet in January to discuss ways of de-escalation.
In recent weeks, statements have been made in Kiev and in the West about the threat of a Russian attack on Ukraine. Moscow stresses that it has no aggressive intentions. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called the information about a possible invasion empty and groundless escalation of tension.
