Germany, which closed its borders due to coronavirus, continues to receive refugees

Despite the introduction of border controls for foreigners, Germany continued to receive refugees into the country. On Sunday, April 5, Deutsche Welle reports.

Due to the threat of the spread of the coronavirus, starting from March 16, entry into the country is prohibited for everyone, except for representatives of certain groups. Exceptions are made not only for doctors and persons crossing the border for professional reasons, but also for refugees without obvious signs of infection.

After the introduction of border controls, Germany refused to enter the country for 63 thousand foreigners. However, despite the absence of an entry ban for refugees, their number has also declined in recent weeks. If, before the introduction of border controls, about 10 thousand asylum seekers arrived in Germany every month, then after March 16 this figure dropped to about one and a half thousand, the newspaper writes.

The current situation does not suit many in the Bundestag, notes Deutsche Welle. Thus, the deputy head of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) faction in parliament, Torsten Fry, is confident that, on the one hand, citizens of other EU countries cannot be denied entry to Germany, and on the other hand, asylum seekers must be allowed to illegally cross the country's border.

On March 11, the World Health Organization declared the outbreak of the new coronavirus infection SARS-CoV-2 a pandemic. According to the latest data, about 1.2 million cases of infection have been recorded in the world, more than 50 thousand people have died.
