Berlin argues that the European Peace Fund should take into account the billions of military aid it has provided to Kyiv on a bilateral basis in its calculations.
Germany is seeking to reduce its contribution to the EU Peace Fund, from which EU countries receive monetary compensation for weapons transferred to Ukraine.
The Daily Telegraph writes about this with reference to a document that the editors received at their disposal.
In a confidential “non-paper”, Berlin argues that the European Peace Fund should take into account the billions of military aid it has provided to Kyiv on a bilateral basis in its calculations. Berlin believes that “contributions in kind” should be “fully counted as agreed contributions of the member state in the Ukrainian envelope” of the fund.
The Daily Telegraph notes that this wording raises concerns that Germany wants to reduce its mandatory contribution to the “Ukrainian envelope” of the EU Peace Fund by the amount of its direct arms supplies to Ukraine.
“Germany often complains that the bloc's member countries are abusing the Peace Fund scheme to send old weapons to Ukraine and use the (cash) reimbursement to modernize their military,” the article says.
Let us recall that at the end of October, the head of the German Foreign Ministry, Annalena Bärbock, said that Germany would strengthen military support for Ukraine to protect against Russian aggressors both at the level of the European Union and at the level of the North Atlantic Alliance.
