German political scientist Alexander Rahr urged Germany to negotiate with Russia to increase gas supplies. He wrote about this on his Twitter account.

According to him, Germany's gas needs may increase due to the energy transition. “Since we are completely phasing out nuclear energy in 2022 and gradually from coal, capacities should be increased by gas, including gas-fired power plants, which will also be converted to hydrogen,” he said.

Rahr called possible agreements with Russia an important condition for a successful energy transition in Germany. He also noted that Russia remains Germany's main gas supplier.

Earlier, High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Josep Borrell linked the difficulties with gas supplies to the EU to the crisis in relations with the Russian Federation. The EU needs to stick to the long-term goal of moving towards zero emissions, he said.
