The launch of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline should not be linked to a possible conflict between Russia and Ukraine. This opinion was shared by a member of the Bundestag from the Alternative for Germany faction and a member of the committee on climate protection and energy Steffen Kotre in a commentary to Lente.ru.

The German politician considered insulting US President Joe Biden's threat to put an end to Nord Stream 2 in the event of a Russian “invasion” of Ukraine. “The President of the United States interferes in the sovereign affairs of Germany and wants to decide for us, the Germans and the Europeans, how we should provide our energy supply,” Kotre was indignant. According to him, the German chancellor had to respond to such statements by the American leader.

The politician emphasized that the potential conflict in Ukraine does not fit into the framework of NATO's collective defense. He called on Russia and Ukraine to take steps to get out of the current crisis.

Speaking to the press after talks with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on February 7, Biden vowed to put an end to Nord Stream 2 if Russia invades Ukraine. At the same time, the German leader, although he stated that Germany and the United States act in a unified manner, never mentioned the name of the project and did not directly answer a single question about it.
