The German government has decided to send an additional military contingent to the NATO composite battalion in Lithuania. This is reported by TASS with reference to the Ministry of Defense of the Baltic Republic.
It is planned that about 350 soldiers and officers of the Bundeswehr will arrive in Lithuania next week. “Reacting to the situation on the border with Ukraine and the deteriorating security situation in the Baltic region, Germany has decided to deploy an additional number of its military personnel in Lithuania,” the report says.
In January, Lithuanian Defense Minister Arvydas Anusauskas asked the NATO countries to protect the republic from the Russian military. According to him, the Russian troops that arrived in Belarus for the exercise not only destabilize the security situation, but also pose a direct threat to Lithuania.
On February 7, Germany announced its readiness to send additional troops. The NATO battalion, stationed in Lithuania since 2017, is commanded by Germany. It consists of 1.2 thousand military personnel, about half of them are soldiers of the Bundeswehr.
