Germany sues Italy again over WW2 compensation dispute

by alex

Italy continues to allow victims of Nazi war crimes to claim compensation from Germany.

Germany has filed a lawsuit against Italy in the highest court of the UN, as Rome continues to allow victims of Nazi war crimes to claim compensation from Germany even after it was previously decided that such lawsuits violate international law.

This is reported by Reuters.

The German statement said that Italy continues to file claims for compensation in national courts, despite the decision of the International Court of Justice in 2012 in violation of Berlin's right to immunity under international law.< /p>

Berlin claims that since the 2012 decision, more than 25 new claims have been filed in Italy seeking compensation from the German state for damages caused by Nazi crimes during World War II. In many of these cases, the courts ordered Germany to pay compensation.

In order to satisfy claims in two such cases, Italian courts are trying to seize property in Rome belonging to the German state.

Germany said that has now filed a case with the International Court of Justice, as the Italian court has said it will decide before May 25 on the forced sale of buildings, some of which house German cultural, archaeological, historical and educational institutions.

Berlin has asked the court to take so-called provisional measures to prevent Italy from selling the property at public auction while a broader compensation claim case is pending.

No date has been set for the provisional measures hearing, but it is expected to take place within the next few weeks.

The controversy over compensation claims in World War II began in 2008, when Italy's highest court ordered Germany to pay about a million euros to the families of 9 people who were killed by the Nazis in the town in Tuscany in 1944.

A number of similar claims for compensation followed.

Germany claims it has already compensated for the injustices of World War II in sweeping peace treaties and reparations agreements with the victims countries, having paid billions of euros since the war ended with the defeat of the Nazi regime in 1945.
