2,500 people in western Germany took part in a protest against the expansion of coal mining and the demolition of nearby villages. They formed a 4-kilometer human chain between the endangered village of Lützerat and nearby Keinberg.
Lützerat is located a few hundred meters from the huge quarry where the German energy giant RWE extracts lignite for combustion in nearby power plants.
Coal mining in Germany should stop by 2038, but environmentalists say it needs to stop at least 10 years earlier for the country to play its part in meeting the Paris Climate Agreement's goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
