An invasion of Mediterranean ants is observed in the south of Germany, which entails serious problems for people.
An invasive species of ants Tapinoma magnum, which naturally lives in the Mediterranean, is spreading rapidly in the south of Germany. Despite their small size – from 2 to 3 mm in length – these insects have become a big problem for local residents.
BILD writes about this.
Recently, in an unknown way, they first got to Switzerland, and from there they reached the German border town of Lörrach. Then the ants attacked Kehl, Heidelberg and Karlsruhe, and now the invasion has spread to Stuttgart.
The ants gnaw through electrical wires and Internet cables, which leads to emergency power outages and communications.
According to experts, these insects do not carry diseases that could be dangerous to people. But doctors do not rule out that contact with them can cause short-term allergies or psychological stress.
The publication notes that in Kele, ants are already penetrating people's homes and destroying garden fences. They also built a huge anthill, in which millions of individuals live, on a children's playground in the middle of the city. Due to the danger to children, city authorities decided to close the playground until a way is found to get rid of the uninvited strangers.
Recall that scientists have found that mosquitoes attack people, tracking them with the help of “thermal imagers” on their antennae. Mosquitoes' infrared sensors work thanks to a special heat-sensitive protein.
