Germany faces snap elections over finance minister's resignation

The collapse of the coalition could be a step towards early parliamentary elections.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced the resignation of Finance Minister Christian Lindner, who leads the Free Democratic Party (SDP). This party, together with Scholz's Social Democrats and the Green Party of Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, is forming a government coalition.

According to Spiegel, the collapse of the coalition could be a step towards early parliamentary elections.

The reason for the announcement of the resignation was the disagreement between Scholz and Linder on budget, financial and economic policy, in particular covering the budget deficit for 2025.

“Too often, Federal Minister Lindner blocked irrelevant laws. Too often, he used petty party political tactics. “Serious government work is impossible in this way,” the Chancellor said.

Scholz said that he will ask the Bundestag for a vote of confidence on January 15. If the majority of parliamentarians do not express confidence in him, new elections will be held by the end of March.

Recall that the current Chancellor of Germany, 66-year-old Olaf Scholz, wants to be re-elected to his post and again head the German government after the federal elections, which are scheduled to take place in the fall of 2025.
