The Nord Stream 2 project is important for Germany, including against the background of the transition to renewable energy sources, explained Matthias Dehner, head of the economics department of the German Embassy in Russia, RIA Novosti reports.
According to the German representative, the country considers gas as a very important technology until at least 2050. In addition, the German government proceeds from the fact that the construction of the gas pipeline will be completed, he said.
Dener also added that Nord Stream 2 is actively discussed in Germany's domestic policy, including in connection with the energy transition.
According to him, now the government considers gas as a stabilizing factor. “That is, in matters of renewable energy production, there is a problem that such sources have an unstable supply,” – explained the representative of Germany. He pointed out that it is power plants that run on natural gas that can switch well from high to low consumption.
Earlier, the member of the Berlin parliament from the party “Alternative for Germany” (AfD) Gunnar Lindemann threatened Germany with darkness in case of refusal to build Nord Stream 2. According to him, this project is necessary for Germany, since the rejection of cheap Russian gas will lead to a sharp increase in energy prices in the country.
After the incident with Alexei Navalny, several German politicians called for the introduction of sanctions against everyone involved in the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. This idea was supported in the United States, noting that the project allegedly increases Germany's dependence on Russia.
