Russian gas and the Nord Stream 2 pipeline are badly needed for Germany's energy balance, said Stefan Keuter, Bundestag deputy from the Alternative for Germany party. This is reported by Izvestia.

Koiter said that Russian gas is the basis for an energy transition, which is to move away from nuclear power and stop producing electricity from coal. “Germany needs a stable power supply with base load power sources. In my opinion, gas from Russia is indispensable for the energy balance of Germany, ”the deputy stressed.

Koiter also called on the German authorities not to aggravate the controversy over the SP-2, and said that he, together with his colleagues from the Alternative for Germany party, would promote certification and the early commissioning of the Russian gas pipeline.

Earlier, German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock said that the SP-2 gas pipeline plays a large geostrategic role, it cannot be considered a private commercial project. “The last few years, even considering the different perceptions [of the project] in Europe, have clearly shown the geostrategic role played by Nord Stream 2,” said Berbock.

On December 22, the German deputy of the Landtag of the federal state of Hamburg Olga Petersen spoke about her positive assessment of the position of the new chancellor Olaf Scholz on SP-2. The German leader does not agree to use the project as a political leverage against Russia. According to her, Europe has an urgent need for the earliest possible commissioning of the new Russian pipeline.
