The German authorities welcome the initiative of NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg to negotiate an alliance with Russia. Berlin hopes that Moscow will accept the offer. This was stated by the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany Andrea Sasse, quoted by RIA Novosti.

Sasse added that the news of a possible meeting of the parties pleased the government, since Chancellor Olaf Scholz sought it, who spoke about the importance of diplomatic initiatives.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg proposed to hold a meeting of the Russia-NATO Council on January 12, on the same day a meeting of the chiefs of general staff of NATO member states will be held. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko said that the main topic of the meeting would be Moscow's proposals on security guarantees (including the non-expansion of the alliance to the east). According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, negotiations will be tense.
