Germany begins full military patrols of the Arctic - what threatens

Germany begins military patrols in the Arctic amid Russian threat. So, already in 2025, Germany will demonstrate its presence in the North Atlantic and the Arctic.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced this during a press conference in Denmark, AFP reports.

The defense minister has announced the deployment of a naval vessel to patrol Arctic waters by the end of 2025, calling it a response to Russia's military buildup in the region.

According to Pistorius, Russia is militarizing the Arctic, including by increasing the activity of Russian submarines.

“Already this year, Germany will demonstrate its presence in the North Atlantic and the Arctic,” he said.

“Atlantic Bear”: How exactly will Arctic patrolling take place

The German defence minister said a German naval support vessel would sail from Iceland to Greenland this year, and then to Canada as part of Operation Atlantic Bear.

“Along the route we will conduct training with our allies in the region, and we have planned the first visit of a German warship to Nuuk in Greenland,” Pistorius said.

During Canada's Arctic exercises, Germany will also deploy maritime patrol aircraft, submarines and frigates to the region, the minister said.

Attention to the situation in the Arctic has intensified after US President Donald Trump announced his intention to take control of the Danish autonomous territory of Greenland.

Let us recall that since 2024, Germany has been declaring the need to increase its presence in the Arctic in the face of security threats from Russia.
