The union calls on the Ministry of Internal Affairs to immediately solve the problem with the uniform, even if this leads to additional costs.
Police of the southern German state of Bavaria resorted to an unusual protest to draw attention to the inadequate provision of police uniforms.
Deutsche Welle reports this.
In a video posted on YouTube by the state branch of the German Police Union (DPolG), two officers sitting in a police car ask each other: “How long have you waited?.” Then both say they waited four and six months respectively. Then the cops get out of the police car without their pants.
Jürgen Kaenlein, head of the Bavarian DPolG, said that the video was not a bad April Fool's joke and should not be laughed at, since the chronic lack of uniform is tantamount to disrespect for officers.
“The Bavarian police could literally be running out of pants,” says Kelein, pointing out that wait times for 21 different uniform items – such as caps, jackets and pants – can last months, if they are available at all.
The trade union calls on the Ministry of Internal Affairs to immediately solve the problem, even if this leads to additional costs.
A Home Office spokesman acknowledged the problem, pointing to disruptions in the supply chain. He mentioned the coronavirus pandemic and the war in Ukraine as additional factors negatively affecting supply and delivery, and promised that the new logistics center will be operational in Bavaria before 2030.
At the same time, the Ministry of Internal Affairs assures that the state police have no obstacles to performing their duties, since instead of the missing elements of the uniform, others can be used.
Recall that in Switzerland the demand of trade unions to pay an additional 13 yearly pension was supported by almost 60% of voters. The need to increase the union's pension payments was argued by the constant increase in the cost of living.
