Gunnar Lindemann, a member of the Berlin parliament from the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, threatened Germany with darkness in case of refusal to build Nord Stream 2. RIA Novosti reports.
According to him, this project is necessary for Germany, since the rejection of cheap Russian gas will lead to a sharp increase in energy prices in the country. Lindemann noted that the consequences of the increase in energy prices will hit primarily ordinary Germans, who have already been hit hard by the restrictions introduced to combat the spread of the coronavirus.
The politician also stressed that without Russian gas, the Germans will remain “in the dark.” He added that electricity and energy in Germany are already twice as expensive as in other European countries.
Earlier, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas responded to calls from German politicians to stop the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. The Minister expressed confidence that the Nord Stream 2 will be built anyway.
After the incident with Alexei Navalny, several German politicians called for the introduction of sanctions against everyone involved in the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. This idea was supported in the United States, noting that the project allegedly increases Germany's dependence on Russia.
Navalny became ill on August 20 during a flight from Tomsk to Moscow. In the first two days, doctors from the Omsk hospital helped him. They also introduced him to an artificial coma. On August 22, the patient was sent to a clinic in Berlin, whose doctors announced the discovery of traces of a substance from the Novichok group in Navalny's body. In September, Navalny was brought out of a coma and discharged; after rehabilitation, he intends to return to Russia.
