Statisticians calculated a decrease of 4 percent

German industry consumed a little less energy in 2019 than a year earlier. The amount fell by 4 percent to 3,821 petajoules, as the Federal Statistical Office announced. Converted into standard household kilowatt hours, this would be a number with 13 digits, according to the statisticians on Tuesday. In terms of total final energy consumption in Germany, industry has a share of around one third.

With a share of 30.5 percent, gas remained the most important energy source for industry last year, followed by electricity (21.6 percent) and mineral oil (15.5 percent) and coal (15 percent). With a share of 4 percent, renewable energies only played a subordinate role in supplying the around 46,000 companies with at least 20 employees recorded in the statistics.

The largest energy consumer among the economic sectors in Germany in 2019 was the chemical industry with a share of 29 percent. More than a third of the energy sources used there (36 percent) served as raw materials, for example for plastics production.
