Foreign policy spokesman for the opposition Christian Democratic Union, Jurgen Hardt, saw “cracks” in German foreign policy due to the lack of a unified position in the German government on Nord Stream 2. He stated this in an interview with the “Funke” editorial group, reports TASS.
Also, social democrats, “greens” and liberals do not have a common point of view regarding sanctions against Russia.
“After several weeks, cracks appear in the coalition’s foreign and security policy,” Hardt said, adding that the question is who determines foreign policy: the Chancellor’s office or the Foreign Ministry.
“For example, the issue of Nord Stream 2 is not clear – the SPD adheres to the point of view that this is an exclusively economic project, and the Foreign Minister [FRG Annalena Berbock] points to a geostrategic role. Different positions are also seen on the issue of sanctions against Russia, ”the German politician specified.
Earlier it became known that the US Senate is preparing a package of sanctions against Nord Stream 2, the vote will take place on January 14.
On January 2, it was reported that Germany had allowed the imposition of sanctions against Nord Stream 2 in the event that Russia invaded Ukraine. Omid Nuripur, a member of the German Bundestag from the Green Party, proposed to consider the possibility of introducing restrictions against the project.
