German Foreign Minister Berbock: new government will tighten defense export policy

German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock said she intends to revise the decisions of the government of the former chancellor of the country Angela Merkel regarding the rules for approving defense export contracts and to tighten them. RIA Novosti reports.

As Berbock told dpa news agency, the new government coalition of Germany is going to reassess the policy of defense exports in recent years. According to her, the authorities are working on a law on defense exports, “which will more clearly define the criteria by which contracts for the export of defense products are approved.”

On the eve it became known that the government of Merkel, who resigned on December 8, approved contracts for defense exports in 2021 for a record amount for a year – more than nine billion euros. More than half of the contacts were approved in the last days of the government and were intended for Egypt.

Earlier, Annalena Berbock announced the refusal of the FRG authorities from the intention to develop nuclear weapons. According to her, Germany has not been and never wants to become a nuclear power. “The goal for all of us is a world without nuclear weapons,” the diplomat concluded. She stressed that Germany intends to contribute to this goal as a country that does not want to be a nuclear power.
