German Chancellor Angela Merkel
German Chancellor Angela Merkel, against the backdrop of a sharp increase in coronavirus infections, urged fellow citizens to limit communication as much as possible, refuse to travel and, if possible, stay at home. “Meet with as few people as possible, whether at home or outside. Avoid any travel and festivities that are not urgently needed. Please stay at home, wherever possible, where you live,” she said in a weekly video message to citizens of Germany on Saturday, October 17.
Merkel acknowledged that this is a harsh restriction, but stressed that it is temporary. “This restriction is ultimately implemented for our own sake, for the sake of our health and the health of all those whom we can save from the disease. This is necessary to unload our health care system, so that schools and kindergartens remain open for our children, for our economy and our jobs, “she said.
Very serious phase of the pandemic
According to Angela Merkel, Germany is going through a very serious phase of the pandemic, which is now spreading faster than at the very beginning about six months ago. “The relatively calm summer is behind us, now we have difficult months ahead. What our winter and Christmas will be like will be decided in the coming days and weeks. We must now do everything to avoid the uncontrolled spread of the virus. Every day is important. Everyone can help reduce infections. by adhering to minimum hygiene standards and rules, “she said.
The German Chancellor noted that Germany survived the first wave of the pandemic relatively well, and this, she said, became possible due to the fact that “we were at the same time and followed the rules, guided by concern for our neighbors and common sense.” “This is the most effective remedy against the pandemic that we now have,” concluded Angela Merkel.
New anti-infection record
According to the Robert Koch Institute, on the morning of October 17, a new anti-record was set in Germany for the daily increase in infected people – 7830 people. This is the highest rate ever in a pandemic. A day earlier, 7,334 new cases of infection were recorded in Germany. Last Saturday, 4,721 new cases of coronavirus were detected in Germany.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, at least 356,378 cases of coronavirus have been recorded in Germany, including 9,767 fatal cases.
