Gagarin's bas-relief was restored and opened in the center of Sakhalin Nevelsk
The restored bas-relief of Yuri Gagarin, discovered among the debris, was opened on Friday in Sakhalin Nevelsk, the administration of the Nevelsky urban district says on Instagram.
A broken stele dedicated to the memory of the first cosmonaut of the planet was found in August on the banks of the river by local residents. The remains of the monument that used to stand at the entrance to the city were covered with rubble and debris. The authorities said that after the 2007 earthquake, the monument was in disrepair and could not be repaired or restored. In 2020, they wanted to move it to a new square, but this turned out to be impossible due to the condition of the stele, it was dismantled.
Sakhalin Governor Valery Limarenko urged to restore the stele and install it in the center of Nevelsk.
